World IP Day 2022

The stage is set for the young, innovative, and ambitious geniuses of our time. This year 2022, World Intellectual Property Day has its spotlights on the new generation of innovators, creators, entrepreneurs, and policymakers with this year’s theme as “IP for a Better Future: Young Innovators”.

The World Intellectual Property Organization created the annual event back in 2000 with the intention of “raising awareness of how patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and designs impact daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”. April 26 coincides with the date when the multilateral treaty, the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, was enforced back in 1970.

WIPO has also prepared the center stage for young change-makers nominated for their groundbreaking work in driving positive change. We will see the likes of Kazumi Muraki and his carbon capture machine, “Hiyassy”; the inventors of the VIHELM ventilated helmet from Vietnam, among many other ambitious youths.

In light of World IP Day, the USPTO is hosting a special program on April 26, from 1-3 p.m. ET.

The program will include:

  • A fireside chat with Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO; Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office; and Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Office, on how to promote IP adoption among young innovators
  • Discussions on supporting IP protection and awareness in sustainable technologies
  • Presentations by U.S. legislators on current IP initiatives before Congress

To register and for the full agenda, please visit the USPTO’s World IP Day webpage.

For the video game creators, live streamers, and gaming fanatics out there, the USPTO campus in Alexandria VA will have an event open to the public. This event on “Digital Creativity” highlights the creative ingenuity of the creators of video games since the industry began. This is scheduled for April 26 at 11 a.m. ET in the Madison Auditorium. View the event’s full program here.

Another event to look forward to is a Zoom conference with the US Copyright Office on April 26 at 9:30 a.m. ET. The video conference entitled “Engage Your Creativity: Copyright and IP for Young Professionals” will dive into the IP rights that young creators benefit from. A must-attend for all young creators, talented artists, and imaginative minds. Check out the US Copyright Office website for the Zoom link.

Come join us and explore how these fresh, energetic minds are unleashing their geniuses in building a better future.
