Beware of the CIP—Parent Applications Can Be Prior Art, JD Supra (Aug. 24, 2014)
With experience with patents in computer, mechanical, and electrical technologies combined with a background in IP transactions and licensing, David Cohen helps businesses and inventors gain broad patent rights and turn their innovations into revenue.
David enjoys identifying new technology trends, including the elements that will help clients stake out their place in the market—he calls that the “special sauce.” He helps clients throughout the lifecycle of their inventions, identifying the best ways to protect and monetize innovation, whether it is patent, trade secret, copyright, or some combination of legal means.
With an unwavering enthusiasm for computer sciences, David began his legal career managing a firm where he negotiated and drafted software development and copyright licenses for companies from startups to large technology companies. His love of computers and computer technology led naturally to the next step in his career: He completed a computer engineering degree on a two-year fast track and added patent strategy and prosecution to his repertoire.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, David earned a degree in international relations, drawing upon a talent for strategic communication that he began honing all the way back on the high school debate team. Not only is David able to elegantly and effectively communicate his clients’ ideas, he also loves to collaborate and believes that seeing multiple sides of an issue helps him get the best results for his clients. He uses this skill to work through registration challenges with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and to talk clients through the strengths and weaknesses of an invention.
Given David’s combined background in transactions and computer science, he can translate “engineering speak” into the language of a patent. His tech experience complements his transactional know-how, as he works with clients on NDAs, licenses, and packaging their patents for the most value to investors.
Outside of the office, David enjoys all types of social dancing as well as sailboat racing. Like his passion for technology and strategy at work, he says these pursuits combine communication, collaboration, and creatively translating ideas into movement.
